Clinical Fellowship

Thank you for your interest in the fellowship program of Joint Preservation, Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy. The fellowship will be carried out at the QEII Health Sciences Centre with the following Orthopaedic Surgeons:

This Fellowship is a one-year experience with combined exposure to clinical sports medicine and arthroscopy, coupled with a research component. Fellows will be gain clinical experience in state-of-the-art minimal-invasive joint preservation and reconstruction techniques in the shoulder, hip, knee, and small joints. Fellows will be responsible for participating in active research, which will be tailored to the experience of each candidate. One day per week will be protected for these research activities. It is expected that the Fellow will participate in weekly conferences, including basic science lectures, Grand Rounds, Journal Club, and Sports Medicine Rounds.

The stipend awarded for this fellowship program is $58,000/year.

Research Fellowship

The Sports Medicine program – orthopedic surgery program offers a 1-year Research Fellowship.  This is an opportunity to advance research skills, present at national and international conferences as well as to attain numerous publications, with the aim to further the aspirants experience for preparation for a career in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine in an academic center.

The fellow will be expected to manage six – ten research projects under one-on-one mentorship from orthopedic faculty within the division of sports medicine at Dalhousie University.

The fellow is expected to submit and present abstracts at annual meetings and prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.  Other activities include research planning and design, data collection and analysis, and manuscript preparation and submission.  The fellow will be expected to work in collaboration with the current existing team of research assistants and statisticians.

The clinical responsibilities are limited to seeing research patients in the hospital as well as in the clinic. The fellow is expected to attend conferences, Grand Rounds and journal club in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

All research is clinical and exposes the fellow to a wide variety of shoulder/hip/knee conditions and procedures – including but not limited to rotator cuff disease, arthroscopic latarjet, acetabular labral lesions and cartilage reconstruction procedures.

For the self-directed, motivated individual, this can be a very productive year. In addition to improving your research skills in an academic environment, the goal of the program is to have the fellow present in many conferences, obtain multiple publications and successfully obtain employment in an academic centre where he/she will continue to advance research in the field of Sports Medicine.

 

Applications need to be received by January of the year prior to the fellowship. Right now, the applications for the year of 2018/2019 are being accepted and therefore the deadline for applications is January 2017 for the fellowship starting July 1, 2018 and ending June 30, 2019.

A complete application includes: (1) a cover letter that states your reasons for applying and the benefits from your specific acceptance, (2) a curriculum vitae and (3) three references.

Electives are an available option while the applications are being processed. Electives are opportunities to come into the hospital and meet the Orthopaedic Surgeons and see what our clinic has to offer. Electives allow the applicants to become acquainted with their prospective supervisors and to demonstrate their advantageous qualities and knowledge.
