Dalhousie University Medical School / QEII Health Sciences Center

The Sports Medicine program – orthopedic surgery program offers a 1-year Research Fellowship.  This is an opportunity to advance research skills, present at national and international conferences as well as to attain numerous publications, with the aim to further the aspirants experience for preparation for a career in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine in an academic center.

The fellow will be expected to manage six – ten research projects under one-on-one mentorship from orthopedic faculty within the division of sports medicine at Dalhousie University.

The fellow is expected to submit and present abstracts at annual meetings and prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.  Other activities include research planning and design, data collection and analysis, and manuscript preparation and submission.  The fellow will be expected to work in collaboration with the current existing team of research assistants and statisticians.

The clinical responsibilities are limited to seeing research patients in the hospital as well as in the clinic. The fellow is expected to attend conferences, Grand Rounds and journal club in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

All research is clinical and exposes the fellow to a wide variety of shoulder/hip/knee conditions and procedures – including but not limited to rotator cuff disease, arthroscopic latarjet, acetabular labral lesions and cartilage reconstruction procedures.

For the self-directed, motivated individual, this can be a very productive year. In addition to improving your research skills in an academic environment, the goal of the program is to have the fellow present in many conferences, obtain multiple publications and successfully obtain employment in an academic centre where he/she will continue to advance research in the field of Sports Medicine.
