General Surgery Information

Prior to Surgery 

Start with Physiotherapy 

  • Improve physical deconditioning: Check out physiotherapy protocols here.  

  • Brace or Sling fitting if needed. 

  • Eat a healthy meal the night before your surgery
  • No Food or Drink after midnight prior to surgery

Day of Surgery 

Arrive 2 hours before your surgery.

Bring your provincial health card and any medication you take. 

If you are booked for surgery on the waitlist day, keep your phone nearby in case the surgery time changes.

How are the surgeries performed? 

Dr. Wong performs many of his procedures arthroscopically. Arthroscopic surgery is performed using very small incisions, often only 1 to 2 cm in size.

When should I arrive to the hospital for surgery?

  • Be sure to arrive at least 2 hours before your procedure.

Will I be admitted to the hospital? 

  • No, This is a "day surgery" meaning you will go home the same day of surgery.

  • You must have someone to drive you home. 

How long will I have to stay in the hospital? 

  • You have to stay in hospital for approximately 2-3 hours after your surgery is completed.

How long is the surgery procedure? 

  • All surgeries take about 2-3 hours.

What kind of anesthetic is used? 

  • General anesthetic.

How long will it take for me to heal from surgery? 

  • 6-12 weeks off work for desk jobs.

  • 4-6 months for manual labour jobs.

  • A brace is worn for 6 weeks after surgery.

How soon can I eat a meal? 

As soon as you can tolerate it. If you feel nauseous you can eat easy foods such as: 

  • Soups

  • Smoothies

  • Hydration solutions (i.e Gatorade, Electrolyte drinks)

  • Apple sauce 

  • Banana's 

  • Yogurt 

  • Plain foods 

What items should I have at home after surgery?

  • Brace/Sling 

  • Dressings 

  • Ice for pain

  • Soap pump- for easier bathing 

  • Waterproof bandages for bathing

  • High-fibre food/liquids

  • Metamucil or Prune/Peach Juice/Cherry Juice 

  • Dried apricots/Prunes & Stay Hydrated

How long should I wear my brace for?

  • Slings & Braces stay on for 6 weeks - including sleep.

  • Only take off to exercise. 

How soon can I have a shower? 

  • 5 Days after surgery.

  • Be sure to remove the outer dressing and replace it with waterproof bandages.
